Terminology
- CGI
Common Gateway Interface, or CGI is a simple script that does the processing of data submitted to a visitor site. CGI is a online form where the user puts on their data as : name, address, phone, etc.. and receives a response from the server such as a confirmation that the data was received.
- CGI-BIN
The directory of server hosting a website where the CGI scripts are stored
- Site Builder
Free software that many hosts offer to enable customers to build websites without the need for expensive software and knowledge of development languages.
- CPANEL
A software with which the user of one host controls the information and files within your site
- Disk Space
The amount of space available on the dedicated hosting, the disk space is for the server as a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) personal computer.
- Statistics
It is a type of software from a web server that allows the user to view account information on visitors to the site.
- Firewall
Firewall is a security feature used by the web server that acts as a filter allowing or denying the transfer between networks.
- FrontPage Extensions
FrontPage is a popular building sites. A server with FrontPage extensions supports many additional features of FrontPage

- FTP
One way to connect to the web server from your personal computer.
- Linux Hosting
The software used in most dedicated hosting servers
Analogy: Linux is a web server as Windows is to personal computers.
- Shared Hosting
The basic and most affordable way to host a site. With shared hosting multiple sites are stored in the same web server, resource sharing.
- Dedicated Hosting
A more expensive hosting. A dedicated server allows the user to have their own server. Increased server speed and less downtime can be achieved with a dedicated server.

Any provider of web hosting .
- IP
The unique address of “data packets” on the internet. The IP is like a human fingerprint.
- Bandwidth
Controls the amount of traffic on your site, the higher the bandwidth, the better it is.
- Domain Name
A domain name is the actual name of the site that must be inserted into an address bar to access a site
Example: www.cellphonewale.org is my domain name.
- Free Domain Name
Many hosting sites offer a “domain name” forever free of cost with the purchase of any hosting plan .
- POP3
An Internet protocol used to connect the e-mail accounts through programs like Outlook and Outlook Express
- Reseller Hosting
Type a sublease, a person I allocate a server and subleases to its customers by providing the tools necessary for them to sell their own hosting plans to make a profit
- SQL
SQL is a scripting language used to query databases. MySQL is an example of a database.
- Subdomain
Are branches or subdivisions of the primary domain, if the main domain is www.domainhost.com, the part that comes before the domain, for example: www.subdomain.domainhost.com is an example of a subdomain.
- Virtual Host
Like shared hosting, multiple sites are hosted on the same server.
- VPS – Virtual Private Server
Increases privacy and performance of web server.
